Centre for Eye Health: From Moodle to Mediasphere

Leading the world in the build and delivery of online CPD for Optometrists. Learning for Vision was developed by Centre for Eye Health (CFEH) as an extension to its highly successful “Series of Continuing Professional Education” (SCOPE) which has educated participating Optometrists since 2010. Centre for Eye Health’s vision is to improve eye health and quality of life by reducing the incidence of preventable vision loss.

Learning for Vision, selected Mediasphere’s award-winning software – PowerCPD – to publish, promote and sell their courses, events and webinars.

Executive Summary

Centre for Eye Health required a cost-effective, user-friendly product to deliver CPD to their members. The product had to facilitate global expansion and be fully customisable to their specific requirements. We recently spoke to Michele Clewett from Centre for Eye Health to reflect on why they transitioned from Moodle to PowerCPD to extend their online CPD portal.

Challenges We Faced With Moodle

We asked Michele to try to outline the reasons Moodle couldn’t work for their organisation, she confirmed: “We required a functional shopping cart to allow members to purchase individual courses without spending thousands on a specialist Moodle developer. Moodle was difficult to navigate and the process was not intuitive or visually appealing. The rapid progression of the standard and quality of e-learning was not complemented by the Moodle platform.”

Michelle explained that “Moodle did not have a feature whereby users could see their CPD point tally. Due to the varying CPD point allocation across different categories and training material this was a huge downside for us. Limitations from customising the user experience was our main reason for transitioning from Moodle; the portal lacked flexibility in features and we needed a platform that could deal with the complicated nature of CPD in accordance with the Optometry Board of Australia and AHPRA guidelines.”

Why Mediasphere?

We asked Michele to provide some clarity as to why they chose the PowerCPD software application. Michelle explained that: “We selected Mediasphere as the platform is a customisable online CPD solution for health professionals.” The PowerCPD software allowed for self-management on all aspects of their project from planning, building, publishing, promoting and selling their CPD content online.

How Has Mediasphere Helped You?

“We really wanted to define how Mediasphere has assisted Centre for Eye Health in line with our dedication to client care.” Michele emphasised that “We can now sell individual modules and packages through the course cart, display CPD points correctly, and we have a product that is more visually appealing and user-friendly than Moodle.”

“Our favourite feature is the option to manage courses by category; with such a large library of material available this helps from an organisational perspective”.

“We have an attractive online continuing education platform to support our large catalogue of material; the presentation has helped us to attract overseas interest allowing us to on-sell some of our material and branch into the UK by duplicating our existing Australian site.”
